In the course of the Black Lives Matter movement, we as Diversity Scouts also wanted to talk about everyday racism and asked ourselves in a Learning Lab Zoom-chat: What can we do against everyday racism? The focus was on mutual information, exchange, asking questions, listening and reflecting on everyday life situations.

Despite social distancing and Corona boredom, the Diversity Scouts Miriam and Lasvini organized a Learning Lab – Zoom games evening on 02.06.20! We got spontaneously together with the FSI Maths+Physics and played several hours of the thriller game City, Country, Death, a special version of the classic game: City, Country, River.

With the categories: offender, victim, crime scene, cause of death, motive for murder, escape vehicle, murder weapon and cause of death, many funny crime stories have been created.

The year has 365 days – some have a special significance in terms of diversity and variety. FAU’s Diversity Scouts have collected numerous dates related to the topic of diversity. The calendar includes religious as well as secular holidays and celebrations and is intended to draw attention to our colorful and diverse society and university community. In addition, we have entered individual dates of relevance to our studies at FAU.

Exhibition opening „AccessAbility – BarriereFreiheit“

On Monday, 28th October 2019, the Diversity Scouts were present at the opening of the exhibition „AccessAbility – BarriereFreiheit“ in the main library. This touring exhibition features 14 people with disabilities who share their experiences in everyday life, at work and in their leisure time or with their families. The focus of the photo exhibition is to show democracy, human rights and attitude. The Swedish author Sara Shamloo, one of the 14 people shown, gave the opening lecture „Same same but different“. The Diversity Scouts took part in a supporting program, where the guests could playfully explore and exchange information about diversity and accessibility. Physical well-being was provided with sparkling wine and Swedish cinnamon buns „Kanelbullar“.

Movie Night of the Diversity Scouts, together with Tessa Ganserer

On Monday, 24 June 2019, the Diversity Scouts and the Referat Queer of Stuve invited to a movie night with MdL Tessa Ganserer. The event took place in the Learning Lab. Tessa Ganserer started with a lecture on the topic trans*, on herself as a person and on the political evaluation of the situation and the demands concerning trans* issues. Afterwards, we watched and discussed the movie „Boy Meets Girl“, which has received multiple awards. The Learning Lab was well attended and we thank Tessa Ganserer, all visitors and the Referat Queer for the great cooperation.

Get together ‚Make it equal – Diversity Scouts‘ at the Learning Lab

On 8th May the students of this two groups pursuing similar goals at the FAU came together at the Learning Lab for exchange. The Cameroonian Choir „Celestial Echoes“ from Bonamoussadi in Douala visited the Protestant Students Association (Evangelischen Studierenden-Gemeinde, ESG Erlangen) in the frame of their exchange project Make it equal. On the occasion of that visit the Diversity Scouts used the opportunity to meet. With coffee, cookies and fruits they presented themselves as well as their work at the FAU. That we are pursuing pretty similar goals became quite a lick in the following talk: Students support each other and through that contribute mutual understanding and diminish discrimination. In the center there were the special challenges international students from global south have to face. Yet their problems have been taken into consideration too less.

In the new issue of the magazine “frisch!” you can find an article about the Learning Lab, the Diversity Scouts and the Writing Centre. These offers support you during your studies and will (hopefully) make learning more enjoyable. With “frisch!” you get important information, insider tips and links about the university. You can also read the current issue online here.

Have fun!

Since March 2018, the Learning Lab is located in the Main Library in Erlangen.
